Does any one know how to make your voice sound like a hip hop DJ's? Is there like some kind of electronic device you can buy? How does T-pain alter his voice. Is there something you can buy to change your voice like this?
How to make your voice sound like a DJ?
Well, when it comes to sounding like a hip-hop mixtape DJ, that's all in your voice. Most of what you hear on mixtapes is pretty dry (no effects) microphone recording. Sometimes there might be a little compression, reverb, or delay, but hip-hop DJ's generally record their drops pretty dry.
On radio mixshows, you hear a lot of compression, reverb, and flange or equalizer tricks to get contrasting voices.
T-Pain uses a plugin called %26quot;AutoTune EVO%26quot; made by Antares to get his vocal quantization effect. I use a cheaper version called %26quot;AutoTune EFX%26quot;, also by Antares, to get basically the exact same effect. It is so easy, it kind of takes the magic away.
(As a side note, T-Pain admits that his AutoTune effect is a tribute to the late, great Roger Troutman. Roger used a device called the TALKBOX to create the same vocal quantization effect, but with far more emotion and soul, throughout the 1980's and 1990's. He fronted the group Zapp and was a solo artist as well. Check out %26quot;More Bounce to the Ounce,%26quot; or %26quot;Computer Love%26quot;. The talkbox essentially allowed the musician to modulate sounds played on a keyboard with his mouth to make it sound like the keyboard was talking.)
